Facebook Uses A.I. To Help Prevent Suicide

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

Wow! Did you hear about the recent report on Facebook being able to utilize A.I. to help predict when users may be suicidal? Facebook has hosted summit for tech company employees to talk about suicide prevention for several years now and the number of Facebook users who see support content for suicide prevention has doubled since Facebook switched on a detection system.
A year ago, Facebook added technology that would flag posts with expressions of suicidal thoughts for the company’s human reviewers to analyze. By November of 2017, Facebook showed proof that the new system had made an impact. “Over the last month, we’ve worked with first responders on over 100 wellness checks based on reports we received via our proactive detection efforts,” Facebook said in a blog post at the time. Guy Rosen, VP of Product Management, also indicated that these are the additional work that Facebook is doing:
-
- Using pattern recognition to detect posts or live videos where someone might be expressing thoughts of suicide, and to help respond to reports faster
- Improving how we identify appropriate first responders
- Dedicating more reviewers from our Community Operations team to review reports of suicide or self harm
