On Friday, Feb. 16, 2018, the special counsel Robert S. Mueller III of the Justice Department issued a 37-page indictment, charging 13 Russians and 3 companies in a broad conspiracy to sabotage the U.S. 2016 elections. By Saturday, Trump said nothing about this multi-year Russian operation to sow discord among U.S. voters, nor what and how he might retaliate and stop this continuing attacks on American democratic process. Trump’s unwillingness to acknowledge the scope of the Russian attack may be demonstrating fear of what is to come from Mueller, who is reportedly close to a plea deal with Trump former aide Rick Gates. Instead, Trump focused entirely on the fact that the Russian operation predated his official presidential campaign, and that this indictment contained no allegations of Trump campaign involvement.

White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley even further suggested that Russia was not the enemy, during an appearance on Fox News.  “There are two groups that have created chaos more than the Russians and that’s the Democrats and the mainstream media,” Gidley said, alleging that they “continued to push this lie on the American people for more than a year.”

It is alarming that the White House would take the position of “Democrats and the mainstream media are more of the enemy than the Russian interference with U.S. elections”, especially after Mueller’s indictment of these 13 Russians and 3 companies.
