The Bach Festival Society was founded in 1935 at Rollins College to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach’s birth by presenting the composer’s orchestral and choral music to the public for its enlightenment, education, pleasure, and enjoyment. Mrs. Isabelle Sprague-Smith, a former New York artist and school principal, was the president and driving force behind the Bach Festival from 1935 until her death in 1950. At Mrs. Sprague-Smith’s death, the future of the Bach Festival was uncertain. Rollins President Hugh McKean asked John M. Tiedtke, the treasurer of the College, to fulfill the obligation and he accepted. Mr. Tiedtke served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees until his death in December 2004. Autumn Ames currently serves as President.
The Bach Festival Society is well known internationally and has enjoyed a long tradition of bringing world-class talent to Central Florida. Since its inception, the Society has expanded its offerings beyond the annual Bach Festival to include Choral Masterworks and Visiting Artists performances, as well as a variety of educational and community outreach programs to encourage participation in music at all levels.
The Bach Festival Society of Winter Park has the distinction of being the third-oldest continuously operating Bach Festival in the United States, as well as being Central Florida’s oldest operating performing arts organization.
Dr. John V. Sinclair was appointed Artistic Director and Conductor of the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park in 1990. Under his tenure, the Bach Festival Choir has achieved international recognition by touring extensively in Europe, producing a nationally released CD, and performing with the London Symphony Orchestra during its Florida residencies. Musically he is known for creative interpretations, expressive conducting style, and innovative programming. Dr. Sinclair is one of Florida’s most visible musicians. In addition to his work with the Bach Festival Society, Sinclair conducts the Walt Disney World Candlelight Processional at EPCOT, directs the Moravian Music Festivals, and participates in recording projects for the Walt Disney Corporation and other entertainment companies. He conducts approximately 150 performances each year. In the past 12 years, Dr. Sinclair has made more than 500 appearances as conductor, clinician, or lecturer throughout the United States and overseas, including conducting a principal mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City. Dr. Sinclair is the Director of Music for Rollins College and holds the John M. Tiedtke Chair of Music. Below, is a video with Dr. John V. Sinclair, in 2016:

In case you are not familiar with Johann Sebatian Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. He is known for instrumental compositions such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations, and vocal music such as the St Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Since the 19th-century Bach Revival he has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. Allow me to share some of Bach’s compositions below:
