The Leaked Nuclear Posture Review: Trumps Wants A Lot More Nukes

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

Since the arrival of Donald Trump in the White House, there seems to be a pattern of undoing as much of the enlightened measures of his predecessor Barack Obama, from policy in immigration, labor rights, environmental protection, to race relations, or climate change. But none of the rollbacks has yet to prove as dangerous as his plan to enlarge America’s nuclear arsenal and to expand its use. During President Obama’s first major address delivered in Prague in April of 2009, on the issue of nuclear weapons, he (former President Obama) declared, “Today I state clearly and with conviction America’s commitment to seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons.” Recognizing that disarmament of our nuclear world could not be achieved overnight, he promised to begin the process with a pledge to “reduce the role of nuclear weapons in our national security strategy….would only consider the use of nuclear weapons in extreme circumstances.” It was the first time that the United States had declared a nuclear-free world as a major policy goal. Obama commissioned Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) by the Defense Department to insure this pledge to be transformed into formal policy. In Obama’s view, nuclear weapons were instrument of last resort and should only be used for deterrence of enemy nuclear strikes on the United States and its allies.
Eight years down the road, as Trump administration lays out its nuclear weapon policy, according to a draft of the 2018 Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) leaked to HuffPost on January 11, 2018, Trump’s DoD (Department of Defense) has steered toward a very different direction, with massive boost in military spending for replacements of all three components of the strategic triad as well as an array of new weapons intended to bridge the gap between conventional conflict and all-put nuclear war. In an October 2017 report by NBC, President Trump had told a gathering of high ranking national security leaders that “he wanted what amounted to a nearly tenfold increase in the U.S. nuclear arsenal.” The report also calls for the development of new, low-yield nuclear weapons (warheads with a lower explosive force.)
