The shattering moment of Trump administration is reached today. Michael Flynn, former Trump national security advisor, pleads guilty on Friday for lying to the FBI about conversations with Russia’s former ambassador Sergey Kislyak (after being asked by a senior Trump transition team official to find out how foreign governments stood on a coming UN Security Council resolution about Israel) and disclosed that he is now cooperating with the special counsel Robert Mueller‘s office. This certainly has shades of Watergate, signifying the intensified investigation. Flynn’s guilty plea has revealed the coordination between Flynn and other Trump advisers in their contact with Russian officials to influence international policy. This also suggests that Mueller may have received other valuable information further up the food chain from Flynn in exchange for Flynn’s plea deal. Of course, those up the food chain who may be involved are: Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, or Trump himself. Below, Discussion about what Michael Flynn’s guilty plea means:
MSNBC’s Chris Matthews speaks on the speculations that this charge suggests that Michael Flynn might be cooperating with the Special Counsel, below:
Further investigation regarding Jared Kushner’s involvement will surely continue, to decipher whether there is any violation of Logan Act or whether illegal deals were made with any foreign nation.
It is time to remain watchful of how Trump may use his pardon power in the months to come. It is too late to pardon Michael Flynn because Flynn has already cooperated with Special Counsel. In reality, there is really no good time for Trump to pardon Michael Flynn. Much remains to be seen.
The reason this whole event has shades of Watergate: it might be to Trump’s advantage to retire/resign and have Vice President Pence pardon him, as Ford did for Nixon.
As George Santayana once commented, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Later, it also surfaced in the form, “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.” or “History tends to repeat itself.”
