Bernie Sanders Inspired American Voters

It is astonishing to hear Bernie Sanders‘ talk, with explanation of disparity of wealth among the American people. A system where 0.1% owns almost as much wealth as the bottom 90% would foster the belief that it is a rigged economy. In USA, the top three wealthiest people (Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffett) now own more wealth than half of the American people. In addition to such an extreme disparity of wealth, Sanders is cautioning the danger in having a handful of billionaires controlling not just the U.S. economy but global economy, moving our planet toward an oligarchy economic and power structure. During early part of the November, a group of investigative journalists released a set of 13.4 million files, known as the Paradise Papers, exposing how horrific the situation of some extremely wealthy people (including billionaires such as Koch Family, Sheldon Adelson, Carl Icahn, Robert Mercer and financial institutions such as Wells Fargo, Citigroup, and Banks of America and multinational corporations such as Apple, Nike, and ExxonMobil , and members of Trump administration such as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson , Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Chief Economic Advisor Gary Cohn , and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin ) funneling their assets to offshore in order to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. The offshore tax evasion is a major global problem. In 2012, the Tax Justice Network estimated that at least $21 trillion is being stashed in offshore tax haven globally. Senator Sanders pointed to a building at Cayman Islands, Ugland House (5 story-building), as an example of a location that is housing 18,857 corporations, to avoid paying taxes. The lost revenue due to offshore tax evasion is costing U.S. government about $166 billion annually. This is money that could have been used to rebuild our infrastructure (roads, highways, bridges, water system, etc.), creating jobs, providing universal pre-K for children, etc. Sanders also noted that the Trump administration and GOP in Congress, instead of cracking down on offshore tax evasion activities, they are focused on passing legislation to worsen the situation and cut taxes for billionaires (by repealing estate tax for families inheriting more than $5.5 million).
