Misuse of Texts By Students
Dear Friends & Neighbors,

Due to some of our readers’/parents’ concerns regarding recent lockdowns (due to students’ threatening texts ) of several local high schools in Central Florida, I feel compelled to address this issue. There are several possible explanations for this type of student behavior:
- Some students may think this is a good way to avoid exams or school.
- The risk-reward center in the brain of teens is not fully developed and therefore poor decisions may be made some times.
As one of the Orange County Deputies mentioned, this type of threatening texts on the part of student may risk: suspension, expulsion, or felony charges. It might be advisable for parents and teachers to warn students about these potential risks. If they are not able to fully grasp the seriousness of felony charges, perhaps 1000 hours of community service in addition to restriction of social media for a month or delaying graduation for a year would be more meaningful in preventing this type of behavior from occurring again. After all, they are wasting thousands of people’s time. Perhaps they will have learned their lessons after 1000 hours of community service plus no social media for a month and their lives will not be ruined by momentary ignorance.
For those of you who are truly concerned about this issue, please feel free to contact OCPS Superintnedent, Barbara Jenkins at 407-317-3200.
For those student who are spoofing to mislead the school administrators, keep in mind that NSA can bypass the spoofing route and find out who is truly responsible. So STOP!
