The recent attack at Los Vegas, Nevada, during an outdoor music festival, was the worst in recent U.S. history, with 58 killed and more than 500 wounded. Although the motivation behind this evil act is unclear, it is certain that there is much we can do to help prevent or reduce future violent acts such as this:

• More thorough background checks prior to permit is given to any gun owner in all 50 states
• Individuals with mental issues or previous criminal records should be prevented from receiving permit for gun ownership
• All agencies where purchases for semi-automatic, automatic, ammunitions, or chemicals that may cause harm to massive groups of people should have record and report unusual quantity of such purchase to the authority
• More classes for safety and use of guns need to be required before any permit of gun ownership should be given. If we put people through drivers’ license exams before permitting them to drive a car,  we should certainly have requirements for exams of safety and use of gun before  permitting them to own or use a gun
• Less coverage/mentioning of the individuals responsible for the massacre by the media

The common question people tend to ask, after an incident such as what had occurred in Los Vegas, Nevada, is “Do fewer guns in a country mean fewer homicides will happen?”  Let’s take a look at the statistics provided in the video below:

This statistics from 2014 indicated that Switzerland may have 7x more gun ownership rate as UK, but only about half the homicide rate of UK. It is widely known that Switzerland has mandatory military service in the Swiss Army for all able-bodied male citizens, and women may volunteer for any position. This policy may have contributed to more disciplined gun owners in Switzerland.  This is why I’d recommend:

• All agencies where purchases for semi-automatic, full-automatic, ammunitions, or chemicals that may cause harm to massive groups of people should have record and report unusual quantity of such purchase to the authority

With greater care, education, and supervision, and without treading on Amendment II, better disciplined gun ownership will help to dramatically reduce unnecessary violence.
