Investigation of 8 Deaths at Hollywood , FL Nursing Home
Dear Friends & Neighbors,
(Please click on red links & note magenta)
At least 8 residents of the nursing home in Hollywood, FL died as a result of non-functioning AC units due to power outage resulting from Hurricane Irma. The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills said, residents ages 71 to 99, died “following a prolonged outage of our air conditioning system due to Hurricane Irma.” The center did not lose power during the storm but lost a transformer that powers the air conditioning, according to nursing home administrator Jorge Carballo. He also stated that the center immediately contacted Florida Power & Light and continued to follow up with them for status updates on when repairs would be made. Outreach was made to local emergency officials and first responders.
Currently the police is investigating these eight deaths at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills. Police is also going from door to door, to each and every one of the other 40 or so nursing homes in the area, to make sure that all residents are all right or to evacuate any to the hospital if so needed. Governor Rick Scott is also pushing for aggressive investigation of these deaths and will very likely to bring about swift changes to improve conditions in Florida nursing homes.
It is unfortunate that this has occurred. But let this be a lesson for all. 1. Perhaps it would be advisable for all facilities such as hospitals, nursing homes, and rehab centers, to be equipped with generators, sized to meet the needs of each facility. 2. Perhaps a general guide of time allotment for observation of residents’ physical/mental deterioration would have directed these 8 residents to be sent to the nearby hospitals before their final departure.
Currently there are 150 other nursing homes in the state of Florida, many of them without power. It is highly recommended that if any one or any facility is in need, please do contact 911 instead of waiting.
