Be Careful, Facebook Users! The first reporting of Facebook admitting to Russia-tied election ad buy occurred about six days ago, with Rachel Maddow at MSNBC, below:
This is a big deal for Robert Mueller investigation and Congressional investigation into Trump’s connection with Russia. Since May of 2016, AIA (American Intelligence Agency) intercepted a communication between two different Russian officials such that a Russian military intelligence officer bragged to a colleague that his organization GRU was getting ready to pay Clinton back for what President Vladimir Putin believed was an influence operation she (Clinton) had run against him five years earlier as Secretary of State. He said the GRU was going to cause chaos in the upcoming U.S. election by spreading news and perverting American social media in the direction that would damage Clinton’s chance of winning the election. Back in May of 2016, a Facebook official said that the company has no evidence of any ad money coming from foreign source, specifically from Russia. But in July of 2016, investigators at the House and Senate Intelligence committees and the Justice Department are examining whether the Trump’s campaign’s digital operation overseen by Jared Kushner helped guide Russia’s sophisticated voter targeting and fake news attacks on Hillary Clinton in 2016. Congressional and Justice Department investigators are focusing on whether Trump’s campaign pointed Russian cyber operatives to certain voting jurisdictions in key states, areas where Trump’s digital team and Republican operatives were spotting unexpected weakness in voter support for Hillary Clinton, according to several people familiar with the parallel inquiries. In the same article, McClatchy spoke with a guy who had just left his post as the deputy assistant secretary of defense for Russia at the Pentagon. He told McClathy, in July, that “There appears to have been significant operation between Russia’s online propaganda machine and individuals in the United States who were knowledgeable about where to target the disinformation,” he said, without naming any American suspects. There had been an automated Kremlin cyberattack to Twitter and Facebook accounts of millions of voters. Some investigators suspect the Russians targeted voters in swing state, and in key precincts. Days after McClatchy revealed this, Facebook said that it has found no evidence of Russian entities buying ads during the election. Then days later, CNN reported that top Democrats on the Russia investigation and Senator Mark Warner in particular on Senate intel, they were convinced that Facebook holds the answers, that investigators are looking for the question of potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. CNN describes Senator Warner as convinced that Facebook can explain whether any one from the Trump campaign helped Russians boost fake news articles on Facebook, targeting Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
In July of 2016, Trump campaign digital director, Brad Parscale, stated, “I am unaware of any Russian involvement in the digital and data operations of the 2016 Trump presidential campaign.” Facebook spokesperson told CNN…”we have seen no evidence that Russian actors bought ads on Facebook in connection with the election….” It was not until Sep. 6, 2017, 4:00 pm, that Facebook released the ungoogle-able blog post with a headline “An Update On Information Operations On Facebook“, admitting that there had been thousands of ads originated from Russia during election campaign of 2016 (via Internet Research Agency, IRA,of professional trolls located in St. Petersburg such that financier of IRA is a close Putin ally with ties to Russian intelligence.). A Facebook official said, “there is evidence that some of the accounts are linked to a troll farm in St. Petersburg, referred to as the Internet Research Agency….” Internet Research Agency had been cited in the intelligence community as part of the attack on U.S. presidential election 2016. This is apparently the key component in Russian attempt in skewing of the U.S. presidential election of 2016 via social media (specifically Facebook). One of the key components of investigation with regard to collusion with Russia is: whether or not there had been any American help to Russian tampering or skewing of the outcome of 2016 U.S. presidential election. It is not legal to have foreign money to come into U.S. to influence the outcome of the election. Any participating American in such an act would be liable for criminal charges.
I am a mother/wife/daughter, math professor, solar advocate, world traveler, yogi, artist, photographer, sharer of knowledge/information, and resident of Windermere, FL. I've worked professionally in applied math, engineering, medical research, and as a university math professor in IL and FL for about 20 years. My husband and I loved Disney and moved down to Central Florida initially as snowbirds. But we've come to love the warmth and friendly people offered by this community and decided to move down to Windermere, FL full time in 2006. I am now spending time sharing information/ knowledge online, promoting understanding of math and solar energy (via http://www.sunisthefuture.net ), and developing Windermere Sun (http://www.WindermereSun.com) as an online publication, sharing and promoting Community ABC's (Activities-Businesses-Collaborations) for healthier/happier/more sustainable living.
