Healthcare: Reliving “Horatius at the Bridge”
Dear Friends & Neighbors,
(Please click on red links & note magenta)
Early Friday morning, the Senate rejected the legislation to repeal parts of the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare). Senator John McCain (R-AZ), casts the decisive vote to defeat the proposal on repealing the Obamacare, joining the two other Republican Senators: Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. The 49 (all R)-51 (48D+3R) vote maintains that, as of now, Obamacare remains the law of the land.
Truly, America has just relived the historical moment of Horatius at the Bridge, with three Roman officers of noble rank, perceiving danger, stood shoulder-to-shoulder to block the passage of the enemy….the three defenders of the bridge withstood sword and missile attacks until the troops had all crossed. The amazing historical parallels may be found in: one of the three officer, Horatius Cocles (one-eyed person) carried the scar of a lost eye from a previous battle while Senator John McCain carried the scar from brain cancer surgery near his left eye. All three Roman officers were quite aware of the danger, as Collins-McCain-Murkowski were also aware of their committing potential political suicide by voting to defeat the proposal. All three Roman officers fought bravely to protect the Republic from the invading dictator, while Collins-McCain-Murkowski voted with their conscience to protect the American people. In the Narrative Poems: II. Rome Horatius at the Bridge, by Thomas Babington, Lord Macaulay (1800-1859),below:
Reasons why the Republicans were not able to repeal the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare), below:
I believe it is time for the American people to tip our hats off to these three Senators (Collins, McCain, Murkowski), Republican officers of noble rank, in having chosen to bravely block the attempt to repeal Obamacare. It is Congress-persons such as these, who would vote for their states’ people above party, who will help the poor and be loved by them. They will go down in American history for having helped millions of Americans to have health care and to maintain their belief in our Republic.
