Dear Friends & Neighbors,

Today, Monday, June 12, 2017, the Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh and the District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine announced this morning that they will file a lawsuit against Trump, claiming the president “flagrantly” violated the Emoluments Clause by maintaining ownership of his business after inauguration (particularly his hotels taking in foreign profits.)
The attorneys general said that they will sue President Trump, alleging Trump has violated the Constitution by taking payments from foreign governments as president. Much of the lawsuit is focused on alleged violations of the emoluments clause of the Constitution, based on Trump’s real estate holdings. The clause prohibits the president and other government officials from accepting foreign gifts and payments without congressional approval. The Trump Hotel in the nation’s capital has been affecting business in the Washington area and is part of the reason for this lawsuit.
