I would have to thank Daisy Morales, Supervisor of State of Florida, Orange Soil & Water Conservation District, for providing me with the experience of observing the root of democracy in action: inviting me to attend a chapter meeting of the Democratic Women’s Club of West Orange County at Village Inn (3130 Daniels Road, Winter Garden, FL), on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, between 1:30-3:30 pm. Their meeting began with Pledge of Allegiance,
something I’ve quite relished during my elementary years and I am sorry to say that is no longer in practice in schools these days. In a room full of diverse group of ladies with optimistic enthusiasm and patriotism, chaired by Monica Readus, they’ve discussed the recent The Women’s March at Washington and Orlando and planned out programs that would help residents/citizens:
- To better understand the workings of a democratic system (opportunity to observe and learn how state government works)
- To recruit new members
- To have important issues (such as education, environment, guns, medicare, ERA, voting rights, reproductive rights, etc.) raised and heard
- Bringing in speakers to help members to become more knowledgeable about important issues and acquire information about pertinent resources available
Segment of the meeting may be seen in the video below:
The invited speaker, Daisy Morales, spoke on the topic of “How The Water Flows“,
the importance of Lawn Fertilizer Management Ordinance, UF/IFAS Orange County Extension Education Center, Earth Day in April, Plant & Garden Festival in March.
Supervisor Morales brought her mobile office and presentation model for demonstration. She was personable and easy to understand that people of all ages (including children among the audience) became quite interested in the topic of water or surface runoff. It is wise of Orange County to have some one such as Daisy Morales to bring to public awareness about problems associated with water conservation or surface runoff and various programs offered by UF/IFAS Orange County Extension Education Center. Some of the courses offered are really helpful for any one residing in Orange County: Fertilizer Education Course for Citizens, Is Beekeeping For Me, Square Foot Gardening, Backyard Hydroponics, Mosquito Management, Lakeshore Landscapes, Spring Lawn Tune Up, Unusual Edible Plants for the Home Vegetable Garden, Annuals & Perennials for Central Florida, etc. These and many other courses can all be found HERE. Allow me to introduce you to Daisy Morales, in the video below:
