Dear Friends & Neighbors,

Time has certainly changed. I remember when I used to walk 6 blocks on my own to elementary school every morning (back in Midwest, from the state of Ohio). Most children did walk to school back then. And I could never recall any traffic congestion issue around school.
Today, I’ve come across quite a few neighbors with kids attending Sunset Park Elementary School in Windermere, discussing about the traffic congestion at the intersection of 535-Overstreet in the mornings. It is understandable that many concerned parents would want to drop their kids off at school on the way to work, but let’s see if we can reduce the amount of time wasted being held up at the intersection or the frustration while worrying about not being able to be on time for the meeting or presentation at work.
- Allow me to draw your attention to part of the solution already proposed/offered by Orange County, the Alternate Access To Sunset Park Elementary School. Let’s take a look at the video below for this Alternate Access:
As parents are heading East on Overstreet toward the intersection in question (535-Overstreet), slow down and prepare to turn left at the intersection (of 535-Overstreet) if there is a traffic jam on the route continue heading East on Overstreet. This “Left Turn onto 535 Alternate Access To Sunset Park Elementary” has guide post (on a green sign) all along the route. It is also presented in the video above. It is essentially:Left onto 535—>Right onto Lake Sawyer Dr./Chase Rd.—>Right onto Ingrid—>Right onto Overstreet (Sunset Park Elementary should then be seen on Left side of the Overstreet).
- For families that live sufficiently close to Sunset Park Elementary with parents who can spare/afford the time to walk their kids to school, it would be greatly appreciated by many in the neighborhood if these parents will make extra effort in walking their kids to school. Not only will this help to reduce the traffic congestion, it may also help to provide the time for parent-child bonding opportunity. What better time to enjoy a wonderful walk, holding your child’s hand and enabling your child to feel protected while viewing those beautiful fluffy
Central Florida clouds together. Children grow up so quickly. These elementary years when your child belongs totally to you may be difficult to ever be recaptured again. Treasure it when you may.
- For those of you who live near 535-Overstreet or 535-Lake Sawyer, with the routine of heading East on Overstreet or turning South onto 535 from Overstreet at the 535-Overstreet intersection, on the way to work in the past during these morning hours, it may not be a bad idea to modify this routine to use the intersection at Lake Sawyer-535 intersection instead of the Overstreet-535 intersection.
Hopefully, these minor modifications in behavior patterns will be sufficient in reducing the traffic congestion necessary for all (the parents, children, and people on the way to work in the neighborhood) to have an easier time during these morning hours.
