Recycle-Reuse For Orange County Greener Living

Universal Recycling Symbol
Dear Friends & Neighbors,
Did you know that—
I. Orange County will be celebrating its 25 Years of Recycling at the Orange County Landfill (12100 Young Pine Road, Orlando, FL 32829) on Saturday, November 14, 2015, 10:00 am-2:00 pm. Festivities will include exhibits, children’s games and activities, and live music. There will be guide tours of the landfill and recycling facility for guests over age four. Residents can bring up to 10 boxes of documents for safe-destruction on-site. For more information, please call the Solid Waste Hotline at: 407-836-6601, email: Solid.Waste@ocfl.net , or visit Utilities Website: www.ocfl.net/utilities/ . This is a great opportunity for teachers and parents to introduce the concept of recycling to children while having a family outing where live music and activities are available.
II. Starting on Jan. 1, 2016, automated collection service will begin. This new collection program will consist of two 95-gallon roll carts: green-lid roll cart for garbage and blue-lid roll cart for recycling.

95-Gallon Roll Carts (blue-lid for recycling, green-lid for garbage)
Special collection vehicles with mechanical arms will be used to grab, lift, empty, and return the roll carts to the ground without the driver leaving the vehicle. I bet this would mean that there will be designated spots where these roll carts will be placed. The two 95-gallon roll carts are being delivered to each residence between October and December, parked in front of each home without the need of disturbing residents. Finalized collection schedules will be distributed to homeowners beginning in December. Starting from Jan. 1, 2016, homeowners will receive garbage, recycling, and yard waste collections once per week. Yard waste will continue to be collected once per week manually in resident-provided cans, bags, or bundles. Residents may use old garbage cans for yard waste disposal. For any collection scheduling from Jan. 1, 2016, please feel free to call the Solid Waste Hotline at 407-836-6601. With regard to your current trash and recycling cans, Orange County Utility can already take in an order for exchanging the 95 gallon roll carts for 65 gallon cans either one or both of them (they have to place an order for them). One-time exchange is free. They will call you around March 2016 and exchange them in April 2016. You can also call them in January and schedule pick up of your old garbage cans.
III. If your garbage or recycling collection falls on Thanksgiving Day, your garbage will be picked up on the next scheduled garbage day and recycling on the next scheduled recycling day. There is no large item collection during a holiday week.
IV. Even though delivery pizza boxes are cardboard, they cannot be recycled because of the contaminated grease or food residues. However, you can recycle frozen pizza boxes (because there is no grease or food residues). I’ve also managed to find some interesting ways of reusing pizza boxes, below:
