After I’ve posted the article on Blue Zone Community, encouraging readers/viewers to write to their local mayors to request implementation of Blue Zone Principles for their communities, I’ve received some of the readers’ comments on their fear of more government control or regulations. While trying to figure out the best way to dispel their fear, I came across a film/video titled, “Merchants of Doubt” during a recent flight that helps to explain why some people would be concerned about the changing role of government in relation to dissemination of information through media.

According to Naomi Oreskes, co-author of Merchants of Doubt (written by Naomi Oreskes & Erik Conway), that the pattern of rejecting scientific evidence has not only been behind the debate for climate change (or, in this case, Blue Zone Community), but for many other debates over the course of half a century. The role of an ideal government is one that would help its citizens to smoothly transition into unavoidable changes, maintains stability for its citizens, while allowing its citizens to have a sense of autonomy and ability to make decisions.

I’d strongly recommend the viewing of the movie/video (Merchants of Doubt) above. If you don’t have the time to read/purchase the book nor view/purchase the video above, Merchants of Doubt, I have gathered the video below on a talk given by Professor/Author Naomi Oreskes at BYU Kennedy Center, summarizing some of the crucial points of this insightful work (book and movie). Hopefully, there will be more people being convinced of the fact that there are limitations to individual actions or free market capitalism. Some times it is necessary to have collective actions or government regulations in order for us to transition into a healthier/happier/renewable and sustainable life style much more quickly. Better yet, if concerned citizens would gather sufficient momentum, much can be accomplished on the local level, in which case individuals may have greater impact or influence over the outcome over their environment and communities.
