Friday, May 1, 2015, is the annual Bike To Work Day in Orland, our neighboring city. Mayor Buddy Dyer (of Orlando) will lead bicyclists from Loch Haven Park along the Orlando Urban Trail to City Hall during this free event. Registration will begin at 7:30 am at the Mennello Museum of American Art ( 900 East Princeton Street), with the ride starting at 8:00 am. There will be free coffee and bike tune-ups for the participants. This event is part of the National Bike Month, celebrated in communities all across the country.
Don’t forget that you can take SunRail to the event! Bicycles are welcome on board all SunRail trains. The closest station to Loch Haven Park is at Florida Hospital (500 East Rollins Street). Following the ride, the closest station to City Hall is the Church Street Station (99 West South Street).
Want to join the fun but don’t have a bike? No worry: Juice Bike Share is offering free rides on their orange bikes that you may have seen throughout downtown Orlando. Juice is also announcing their expansion from 20 to 200 bikes at 20 stations throughout downtown, Thornton park, and College Park. In order to have access to free Juice’s bike on the Bike To Work Day, it is necessary to register at this site to reserve a bike. It’ll also be a good time to check out their price points if you may plan on using them in the future. There are multiple possibilities: $30 per month, $79 per year at 60 minutes per day, or $99 per year at 2 hours per day. Life would be much easier if many commuters in Central Florida would decide to forego I-4 in favor of much cleaner alternative mode of transportation (not to mention the pounds one would be able to shed from regular biking exercises!) The end result: we will have a much cleaner, healthier, and friendlier environment! Don’t forget the fuel cost, parking cost, and time saved! Perhaps we will see a lot more people considering biking to work.
This year’s sponsors for Bike To Work Day are:
- Bikes, Beans, & Bordeaux
- Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
- Kyle’s Bike Shop
- Orlando Bike Share
- reThink
- Retro City Cycles
- Winter Park Cycles
In Windermere, we are fortunate enough to have many bike trails and bike paths. Let’s put them into good use! Why should Orlando have all the fun?!
