Dear Friends & Neighbors,

Were you or your business affected yesterday (on Wednesday, March 11, 2015) by the iTunes, Apple App Store, Mac App Store, or the iBook Store’s global outage? It started around 5:00 am (EST), according to Apple’s status page, and lasted more than 7-hours (some thought it took 12 hours) before Apple was able to restore the service in the late afternoon (EST). “The cause was an internal DNS error at Apple,” said Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr. DNS stands for Domain Name System. By 1:30 pm (EST) access to Apple’s digital stores was still limited. A message appeared indicating users can’t connect to iTunes when users were trying to make a purchase or download a free app. This widespread outage not only frustrated many users around the world, it also alerted us to the fact that these cloud services are not infallible. Local backups may not be a bad idea.
On average Apple’s revenue went down about $2.2 million per hour during this outage. The outage came two days after the company held an event promoting the Apple Watch.
For future reference, this web site may be useful for Apple’s status update.
