Recalling our previous post on “Unhappy Floridians Due To Malfunctioned Florida Unemployment Website, Get Your Application Here“, on Monday, May 4, 2020, Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida official overseeing Florida’s backlogged unemployment system held a news conference to address criticism about how Florida has handled the more than 1 million claims filled due to coronavirus layoffs and furloughs. Governor DeSantis also announced that he is ordering his chief inspector general to investigate the state’s backlogged unemployment system, in the video “Incomplete applications, errors slow Florida’s unemployment payments as Gov. Governor Ron DeSantis has taken dozens of questions about the system in his daily briefings. He, too, wants an investigation, in the video “DeSantis orders investigation into Florida’s unemployment system“, below:
The investigation will delve into contracts awarded to a $77 million system under former Governor Rick Scott in 2011. Governor DeSantis said, “All this money was spent on this system when it clearly did not have the capacity for anything above 3% to 4% unemployment, even a mild recession. That’s not a good use of taxpayers’ money.”
On Wednesday, April 29, 2020, a Tallahassee-based law firm, Gautier Kitchen Esq. and Marie Mattox P.A., filed the lawsuit against Governor DeSantis and the state’s Department of Economic Opportunity regarding the beleaguered unemployment system and impact on workers, claiming the state is failing to maintain an adequate unemployment benefit system and they want immediate payment for hundreds of thousands of Floridians, in the video “Florida law firm files lawsuit against Gov. Let us be wary as the country will be reopened. Let’s be cautious and wear facial coverings in public and continue practicing social distancing (at least 6 feet from others), for COVID-19 is not yet gone. It does appear that U.S. is deficient in testing and contact tracing at the moment. Let’s hope this will soon change. It is not likely that our life will return to normal until 2022, after the vaccine for COVID-19 will become available to general public globally.
