Governor Andrew Cuomo warns New York will run out of ventilators in 6 days, coronavirus deaths in the U.S. surge to over 6,000, and a record 6.6 million people filed jobless claims last week, in the video “Nightly News Broadcast (Full) – April 2nd, 2020, NBC Nightly News“, below:
The first unemployment relief checks are set to go out on April 13, 2020. Small business owners are able to able to apply for loans, through their existing banks or approved lenders, starting on Friday, April 3, 2020.
On Thursday, April 2, 2020, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, said the coronavirus outbreak has now reached every single county in state of New York, surging to 92,381, with 2,373 deaths. New York state has become the global epicenter of the outbreak, with more reported infections than China’s Hubei province, where the coronavirus surfaced in December of 2019. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo held a press conference on the coronavirus pandemic in the video “Gov. Andrew Cuomo holds presser on coronavirus: 4/2/2020, USA TODAY“, below:
Governor Cuomo said the state of New York would provide assistance to business manufacturing personal protective gear (such as face masks, medical gowns, face shields, and gloves) if possible. Cuomo said, “I’m doing everything I can, but people are still dying and that is hurtful and humbling and painful. Just painful.” Cuomo said the COVID-19 outbreak isn’t just hitting urban areas, but spread across the state including rural communities and suburban areas. Governor Cuomo pleaded with local hospitals to not hoard supplies, “We are asking all the hospitals to contribute what they have to that central stockpile and then we will distribute on a needed basis.”
It is predicted that New York state will reach the peak of coronavirus cases about seven to thirty days, and it doesn’t have enough ventilators to meet the coming wave of seriously ill COVID-19 patients. “At the current burn rate, we have about six days of ventilators in our stockpile… They are very expensive and the state is broke, so I have no desire to buy more ventilators than we need.”
Doctors and nurses from upstate New York have been shifted to New York City and areas that are the hardest hit. Toward about 25,000 out-of-state healthcare workers who have volunteered to come to New York, Governor Cuomo said, “I thank their patriotism…These are beautiful, generous people and New Yorkers will return the favor…”
Governor Cuomo’s brother, Chris Cuomo, a CNN anchor who tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week, also appeared in the press conference via video, providing familial bonding moments welcomed by viewers.
New York City’s Mayor Bill de Blasio proposes a ‘draft’ of medical personnel to national service. “We’re in the middle of a war,” says de Blasio, who called “for our nation to enlist our medical personnel on a national basis.” in the video “New York City Has Nearly 1 in 4 Of All COVID-19 Cases in US, NBC Nightly News“, below:
Robert Kraft, the owner of New England Patriots, partnered with Charlie Baker, Massachusetts Governor, in purchasing 1.4 million N95 masks from China as the U.S. death toll continues to rise from the novel coronavirus. Kraft, out of respect and admiration for Governor Cuomo’s leadership, also purchased additional 300,000 N95 masks for New York state, flown in on the Patriots’ personal plane.
Kraft said in a statement, “It is an honor for our family to be part of this humanitarian mission. We knew that purchasing greatly-needed N95 masks and providing the Patriots plane to expedite their delivery to local hospitals would immediately help protect our courageous healthcare professionals.”
Kraft also added, “Multiple organizations across the public and private sectors, all of which were in lockstep with Governor Charlie Baker’s visionary leadership, worked together to execute this mission with the purpose of helping save lives. I truly hope that in doing so, we can in some way inspire others to find creative ways to give more in support of our doctors, nurses and first responders. It’s nice to care for those who provide such compassionate care for us.”

President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, said on Wednesday, April 1, 2020, that Taiwan will donate 10 million face masks to countries severely affected by COVID-19. She made the announcement at a morning press conference at the Presidential Office building. The president said that once Taiwan is able to meet domestic demand, it will provide face masks and other support to countries in need. Tsai said she hoped to demonstrate not only that “Taiwan can help,” but that “Taiwan is helping” as the world confronts the challenges of the pandemic. Tsai Ing-wen said, “Over the past months, we have seen countless acts of bravery and sacrifice from medical workers around the world. It is our duty as global citizens to give them our full support. President Tsai delivered a speech on the COVID-19 pandemic, flanked by officials who stood apart at a safe distance. She added, “We had a message for the international community. We need to step up cooperation, and that means sharing experiences and materials, and working together to develop treatments and vaccines. Pandemics cannot be stopped by one country alone. And Taiwan stands ready to do our part. Going forward, we will donate surplus masks and other supplies to our allies and countries hit hardest by COVID-19. These supplies will go to medical workers on the front lines who are working around the clock to save lives. Joseph Wu, Foreign Affairs Minister, said, “Our first round of international humanitarian aid will be for the U.S., for European countries that have been severely affected, and for our diplomatic allies. Besides the mask donation, the government has ordered the increased production of quinine, a treatment for mild COVID-19 symptoms, which will be offered to other countries. Officials said Taiwan would also share its “digital quarantine system” to help other countries fight coronavirus spread. Taiwan’s epidemic strategy has won recognition from many in the international community. Recently, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the U.S. would do its best to assist Taiwan to play an appropriate role at the World Health Assembly and that more countries have voiced their support for Taiwan, in the video “Taiwan to donate 10 million masks to COVID-19 stricken countries“, below:

The second team of Chinese medical experts arrived in Italy to share COVID-19 treatment experience as the virus has infected more than 35,000 Italians and killed nearly 3,000. The 12-member team from east China’s Zhejiang Province arrived in north Italy’s Lombardy, the worst-hit area in the country claiming nearly half of Italy’s total COVID-19 cases. They are set to work with Italian medical institutions for two weeks, in the video “Second Chinese Medical Team Arrives in Italy“, below:
