Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings joined other leaders around Florida Tuesday, March 24, 2020, announcing plans to sign a stay-at-home executive order, with non-essential businesses shutdown, that will go into effect, starting from Thursday, March 26, 2020, 11:00 pm to Thursday, April 9, 2020, 11:00 pm. Testing, social distancing, and stay-at-home are measures to help flatten the curve, to slow down the spread of COVID-19 in order to prevent overwhelming the local healthcare facilities.

Lynx and SunRail will still be in operation but should only be used for essential activities or businesses. Essential activities or businesses are defined: going to grocery store, getting take-outs from a restaurant, going to the pharmacy, gas stations, police stations, fire stations, hospitals, medical appointments, and healthcare facilities. When conducting essential activities or businesses, be sure to practice social distancing by staying six feet away from others.
Orange County also provided a list of essential businesses that will continue to operate during stay-at-home. If your job is not listed below, then plan on working from home :
- Healthcare providers
- Grocery store employees
- Food cultivation
- Any business providing food, shelter, social services, and necessities of life
- Hotels and motels
- Media
- Gas stations
- Auto-supply, auto-repair, towing companies
- Banks and other financial institutions
- Hardware stores
- Licensed contractors
- Businesses providing mailing and shipping services
- Laundromats and dry cleaners
- Restaurants offering pickup option or delivery
- Schools providing free food services to students
- Businesses supplying office products needed for people working from home
- Businesses selling medical equipment and supply
- Businesses shipping groceries or goods to residents
- Airlines
- Taxis
- Bus employees
- Home-based care for senior adults or children
- Assisted living facilities and nursing homes
- Legal services
- Landscape and pool care business
- Childcare facilities
- Business operating at an airport or government facility
- Pet supply stores
- Logistics providers
- Telecommunication providers
- Providers of propane or natural gas
- Construction sites
- Architectural, engineering and land surveying services
- Factories and plants
- Waste management services
- Businesses interacting with customers solely through electronic or telephonic means
- Businesses delivering products through mail

Universal masking, social distancing, and testing are important and had been effective in mitigating the spread of COVID-19 in Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, and Macau.
So, let’s all try to stay home as much as possible! As for individual citizens, please wash your hands often (each time for at least 20 seconds), get tested if and when you can, stop shaking hands, observe social distancing (staying at least 6 feet from others), be sure to get sufficient rest, be well nourished, exercised, drink plenty of hot water and ginger tea, and decrease unnecessary social contacts.
Some of the basics needed in prepping for potential self-quarantine:
- Hand cleanser (soap & water & hand sanitizer)
- Cleaning products: for cleaning household surfaces such as countertops, faucets, door knobs, drawer pulls, light switches, telephone, handles of brooms, mops, etc., for reference list suggested by CDC, click HERE.)
- Laundry detergent
- Food (at least 3 weeks worth of staples: beans, pasta, rice, canned vegetables, frozen food, canned soup, shelf-stable milk, or dehydrated food, etc.)
- Water (be it in bottled water form or activated carbon filter pitcher and/or distiller)
- Face masks
- Prescription meds (talk to your doctor as to how much of your prescription meds need to be stocked)
- Over-the-counter medicine (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, cough medicine, etc.)
- Thermometer
- Robust WiFi
- Video conferencing services
- Entertainment (check out: Netflix’s Pandemic & Amazon’s Contagion)
- Exercise guides or equipment
