House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said the Democrats will “be introducing our own bill.” while Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., expressed that Republicans are “very close” to a deal. Italy is struggling most to combat Covid-19, with a total of nearly 5,000 coronavirus deaths. Officials there once again reported the largest one-day increase in fatalities. Regular papal events are no longer open to the public. Pope Francis’s Sunday Angelus prayers are broadcast online instead. The Vatican’s Saint Peter’s Square has been sealed off. While authorities around the world take more drastic measures to try to slow the spread of the coronavirus, the number of cases globally nearly doubled last week. The current tally by Johns Hopkins University in the United States counts more than 300,000 infections worldwide and over 13,000 deaths. So far Germany has held back on introducing a nationwide lockdown in response to the coronavirus outbreak. But numerous individual states have been tightening restrictions on public life in an attempt to stop the virus’s spread. Now the states of Saarland and Bavaria have ordered that people be confined to their homes. In Berlin authorities have as yet taken a less stringent approach to public spaces in battling the virus. They’ve only shut down some places like playgrounds. Parks have remained open. But they were much less popular on a mostly sunny day in the German capital. Officials have threatened a much wider crack down should too many people flout the advice to stay mostly indoors, in the video “Coronavirus in Germany: Bavaria on lockdown, is Berlin next?, DW News“, below:

Hong Kong now has more than 270 cases, in the video “Coronavirus: Hong Kong braces for ‘scary’ second wave, DW News“, below:
Universal masking is effective in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau.
