Florida Department of Education announced today, Friday, March 13, 2020, all state schools will close for one additional week beyond spring break (returning March 30 in Orange County). State testing will also be delayed by two weeks and all extra-curricular activities will be suspended.

According to the Florida Department of Health, two days ago, as of March 11, 2020, 26 Florida residents have tested positive with 2 deaths for coronavirus (by today, March 13, there are 29 Florida residents tested positive for COVID-19 and 2 deaths), in the video “Florida Gov. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says two people in his state have become the first to test “presumptively positive” for COVID-19 as he ordered health officials to declare a public health emergency amid the global spread of the coronavirus, in the video “Florida declares public health emergency for coronavirus“, below:
The informational session was held from noon-1:00pm on Thursday, March 12, 2020. At the time, there were no known positive cases of COVID-19 in Seminole County. The Florida Department of Health announced the fourth positive case of COVID-19 in Broward County in an early morning press release Tuesday. It said three of the cases are linked to a company that operates out of Port Everglades, in the video “3 coronavirus cases in Broward County linked to company that operates at Port Everglades: DOH“
Governor DeSantis declares state of emergency and warns those who have recently returned from travel to countries with level 3 advisory (Italy, China, Iran, South Korea) to be mindful of interactions with others, self-quarantine for at least 2 weeks.
Florida Department of Education announced today, Friday, March 13, 2020, all state schools will close for one additional week beyond spring break (returning March 30 in Orange County). State testing will also be delayed by two weeks and all extra-curricular activities will be suspended.
Across USA: Los Angeles and San Diego schools will be closed on Monday; many sports events and activities are also canceled; Boston Marathon is postponed until September 14.
Across the globe: Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix is closed;London Marathon is postponed until October; England’s local elections are postponed until 2021; schools in Switzerland, Belgium, and most of Germany are also closing; travel restriction and quarantine measures are implemented in: Czech Republic, Slovakia, Malta, Hong Kong, Pakistan, and Ukraine.
As for individual citizens, please wash your hands often, stop shaking hands, be sure to get sufficient rest, be well nourished, exercised, drink plenty of hot water and ginger tea, and decrease unnecessary social contacts.
*Drive-by testing is speedy, effective, and necessary in order to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. Paid leaves are also helpful in reducing the spread. Please contact your state legislators to speak in support of these two measures.
Some of the basics needed in prepping for potential self-quarantine:
- Hand cleanser (soap & water & hand sanitizer)
- Cleaning products: for cleaning household surfaces such as countertops, faucets, door knobs, drawer pulls, light switches, telephone, handles of brooms, mops, etc., for reference list suggested by CDC, click HERE.)
- Laundry detergent
- Food (at least 3 weeks worth of staples:beans, pasta, rice, canned vegetables, frozen food, canned soup, shelf-stable milk, or dehydrated food, etc.)
- Water (be it in bottled water form or activated carbon filter pitcher and/or distiller)
- Face masks
- Prescription meds (talk to your doctor as to how much of your prescription meds need to be stocked)
- Over-the-counter medicine (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, cough medicine, etc.)
- Thermometer
- Robust WiFi
- Video conferencing services
- Entertainment (check out: Netflix’s Pandemic & Amazon’s Contagion)
- Exercise guides or equipment
