Italy is extending its coronavirus quarantine measures, which include a ban on public gatherings, to the entire country. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said that people would only be permitted to travel for work or family emergencies. He said the measures, which will come into effect on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, were to defend the most fragile members of society. The decision follows a large increase in Italy’s coronavirus death toll – which jumped by 97 to 463. It is the worst-hit country in the world after China.
Top oil producers Saudi Arabia and Russia are arguing over the price and flow of oil, leading to sharp drop of the oil prices. This had also contributed to the dramatic drop (plunged more than 2,000 points or 7.79%) and 15 minutes suspension in stock market today.
In the United Kingdom, people who show “even minor” signs of respiratory tract infections or a fever will soon be told to self-isolate in an effort to tackle the coronavirus outbreak. The Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the UK government’s chief medical adviser Chris Whitty said a change in advice could happen in the next two weeks. Five people have now died from coronavirus in the UK.
As the international community struggles to contain the spread of coronavirus, the World Health Organisation has praised China for its response and suggested it offers a model for others to follow. But inside China there’s anger over the way the authorities have handled the outbreak, with censorship being stepped up, which is the very approach that experts say helped to accelerate the spread in the first place.

The Dow recorded a new worst point drop on record, overtaking the massive loss from February 27. The index closed down 2,014 points, or 7.8%. It was its worst day since October 2008. Stock futures trading was halted following steep losses in the overnight session, which carried into regular trade: Shortly after market open the S&P 500 dropped 7% and triggered a circuit breaker, forcing the New York Stock Exchange to suspend trading for 15 minutes, in the video “Dow logs biggest point-drop in history as stocks tumble“, below:
The Dow Jones Industrial Average on Monday saw its worst trading day since 2008 thanks to an oil price war and fears of the spread of coronavirus across the world. Associated Press White House reporter Jill Colvin, Wall Street Journal congressional reporter Natalie Andrews and New York Times Federal Reserve and economic reporter Jeanna Smialek spoke to CBSN’s “Red & Blue” about the unfolding situation in Washington, in the video “Stock markets plunge and lawmakers begin to self-quarantine after coronavirus contact“, below:
As coronavirus fears grow worldwide, the travel industry is suffering the hardest economic hit since the September 11th terrorist attacks. Washington Post economics correspondent Heather Long joins CBSN to discuss the response, in the video “Coronavirus hits travel industry with biggest crisis since 9/11“, below:
