The novel coronavirus has claimed more lives in the U.S., with a total of 10 deaths in Washington state and one in California. As the number of infections continues to rise, the House and Senate have agreed on a bipartisan, multi-billion dollar emergency spending measure to fight the outbreak. The bill includes money for vaccine research, medical supplies and more. William Brangham reports, in the video “As virus deaths rise, Congress agrees on $8.3 billion to fund public response“, below:
Congress has approved $8.3 billion in emergency funding to combat coronavirus. US congressional negotiators have agreed to allocate $8.3 billion in emergency funds to combat coronavirus, a House Democratic aide said. The Democratic-led House made the decision Wednesday, March 4, 2020, after they were reportedly working to provide between $6 billion and $8 billion. Representatives are set to vote Wednesday on the funding decision and the Senate will then vote on Thursday, March 5, 2020, with a bipartisan bill expected to be on the president’s desk by the end of the week. The $8.3 billion will reportedly leave $3 billion for research and development, $2 billion for prevention, preparedness and response, nearly $1 billion for medical supplies, health care and community health centers, leaving $1.25 billion to confront the coronavirus overseas. President Donald Trump originally asked Congress for just $1.25 billion to combat COVIDW-19, the disease cause by coronavirus. But last week he said, ‘Congress is willing to give us much more than we’re even asking for. That’s nice for a change, but we are totally ready, willing and able.’
The Coronavirus has killed 11 in the US and sickened 140 people in total so far. Worldwide, the virus has killed more than 3,200 and infected approximately 95,000.
