Coronavirus COVID-19 Global Cases by John Hopkins CSSE
Up to date global information and data on COVID-19
Dr. Anthony Fauci, from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, discusses the likelihood of a coronavirus outbreak in the U.S. and precautions the country should take to prevent its spread, in the video “Outlook for coronavirus to spread in the US“, below:
According to Dr. Fauci, asymptomatic transmission may occur. Vaccine will not become available until 2021. He is not certain whether or not this particular nCoV or COVID-19 will diminish as weather warms.

Another doctor in China has died after contracting the new coronavirus in Wuhan, which is the epicenter of the outbreak. The doctor’s death comes as health officials in China publish details of a study into 70-thousand cases of the virus. The report suggests that the number of new infections is falling. So far the virus has killed just over two percent of those infected, with older people and those with existing conditions more likely to die. But Beijing warns that could change when people start returning to daily life. The death rate is lower than for previous coronaviruses such as SARS. A SARS outbreak in Hong Kong in 2003 killed around 300 people. DW correspondent Charlotte Chelsom-Pill reports from the territory on how many Hong Kongers fear history could repeat itself as the new coronavirus spreads, in the video “Hong Kongers fear coronavirus could spread through pipes, DW News“, below:
In China, there’s been a huge outpouring of grief and anger at the treatment of a doctor, who tried to warn the world of the dangers of the coronavirus. Hundreds of millions of people have viewed social media posts about Dr Li Wen-Liang who’s died after contracting the illness, while treating infected patients. He was censored by the authorities in the city of Wuhan, after raising the alarm back in December about the potential dangers of the new virus. The government has now sent officials to investigate how he was treated. As the coronavirus continues to spread, controls and restrictions are increasing right across China, where more than six hundred people have died, and another thirty one thousand have been infected. A British man on his honeymoon is among more than sixty people, who’ve tested positive for the virus on board a cruise ship in Japan. Alan Steele from Wolverhampton has been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Of the 3700 people on board the ‘Diamond Princess,’ it is thought there are around eighty Britons, with the ship quarantined in Yokohama, Japan. All the passengers have been confined to their cabins, for the next fortnight, in the video “China struggles to contain virus-BBC News“, below:
China has “removed” several senior officials over their handling of the coronavirus outbreak – as the death toll rises. Some 242 deaths from the new coronavirus were recorded in the Chinese province of Hubei on Wednesday, the deadliest day of the outbreak. There was also a huge increase in the number of cases, with 14,840 people diagnosed with Covid-19. Hubei has started using a broader definition to diagnose people, which accounts for most of the rise in cases. China sacked two top officials in Hubei province hours after the new figures were revealed, in the video “Coronavirus: Senior Chinese officials ‘removed’ as death toll rises-BBC News“, below:
China’s President is admitting shortfalls in the response to the coronavirus outbreak. Xi Jinping is promising to fix problems and loopholes in the health system. The epicenter of the outbreak, Hubei province, reported a sharp increase in new cases. But the World Health Organization says that’s because doctors are using a broader definition to diagnose the infected. Hubei’s communist party chief is among four local leaders to be sacked for mismanaging the response, in the video “Is China losing control of the coronavirus outbreak? Inside Story“, below:
Brighton, home to the UK’s first cluster of Coronavirus cases, is feeling the pressure. With schools, doctors surgeries and individual residents taking precautions – there are many urgent questions swirling, in the video “Coronavirus: Is Britain Ready? Documentary “, below:
On The Listening Post this week: For a moment, China saw public anger and real news reporting about the coronavirus go uncensored. How come? Plus, the sound and fury of India’s news anchors. Speaking up about the coronavirus – but at what cost? The death of Li Wenliang, a doctor in Wuhan, the Chinese city at the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, has caused collective outrage online. Li was amongst the first to raise the alarm. He was then taken into custody and forced to confess to wrongdoing – spreading rumors – essentially for doing his job. It is rare for the Chinese to openly criticize the government; rarer still when those criticisms on social media are not instantly deleted by censors. And for Chinese journalists, there was a temporary window that opened for some hard-hitting investigative reporting. It appears that that window has since been closed – replaced by what Beijing calls “managed transparency” in the video “Speaking up about the coronavirus – but at what cost? The Listening Post (Full)“, below:
The Coronavirus death toll has now passed 1,700. WHO experts have arrived in Beijing to talk with their Chinese counterparts on how to deal with the outbreak. The total number of cases of so-called COVID-19 in the Asian country, most of them in the central province of Hubei, has surpassed 70,000, according to the latest update from the country’s National Health Commission. DW confirmed that Xiaogan in Hubay province is using tight new restrictions. Residents there are not being permitted to leave their homes or to use their private vehicles, in the video “Coronavirus: China bans citizenship from leaving their homes, DW News“, below:
As the number of coronavirus cases rises, epidemiologists around the world look at maps, flight bookings and population data to estimate the size of the outbreak—and explain why their results are higher than China’s official tally, in the video “Why Coronavirus Estimates Are Higher Than China’s Official Tally, WSJ“, below:
More than 74,000 people have now been infected with the coronavirus. Outside of China the biggest cluster of cases has been aboard the cruise ship the Diamond Princess, which has been in quarantine in the Japanese port of Yokohama for two weeks. Hundreds of passengers who have tested negative for the virus have started leaving the ship and are returning to their home countries. The death toll from the coronavirus has now surpassed 2,000, and the virus has spread to more than 20 countries around the world on five continents, in the video “Japan ends ‘failed’ coronavirus quarantine on cruise ship, DW News“, below:
Health officials in China have published the first details of more than 44,000 cases of Covid-19, in the biggest study since the outbreak began, in the video “Coronavirus: Largest study suggests elderly and sick are most at risk – BBC News“, below:
Weeks after the outbreak of a novel coronavirus in Wuhan, China, researchers are still not sure how it spreads between humans, and how to neutralize it, in the video “Coronavirus: What do we know so far? The Bottom Line“, below:
Johns Hopkins experts gathered at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health for a panel covering the most important things to know about the coronavirus outbreak, in the video “Novel Coronavirus Panel at the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health“, below:
Labs are working on novel ways to use antibodies as possible treatment of Coronavirus (COVID-19) infections. Dr. Seheult discusses the role of antibodies in fighting viral infections and what a perceived second infection may actually indicate. Case fatality (and problems with estimating it at this early juncture) and practical recommendations for health care teams is also discussed, in the video “Coronavirus Epidemic Update 21: Antibodies, Case Fatality, Clinical Recommendations, 2nd Infections?“, below:
