Today, Feb. 21, 2018, in front of the Old Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida, one week after the worst mass shooting at a high school in U.S. history, students, parents, and activists descend on Florida Capitol at Tallahassee to rally (#NeverAgain rally) for gun control in Florida.
“We want change! We want change! We want change!” the chant was heard over and over again….
More than a dozen speakers, including representatives, senators, activists, and students share their desire for change, with the crowd chanting in agreement.
These students and activists also held meetings throughout the day with Florida lawmakers and officials (such as Governor Rick Scott and Education Commissioner Pam Stewart) from both parties to discuss gun legislation. The governor was scheduled to speak to groups of students at 5:00 pm. Florida House Minority Leader Janet Cruz told the crowd at the rally, “There’s no reason that children in the United States of America should understand how it feels to lives in a war zone. Our legislative process here, you know what it is? It’s bulls—t!”

Much remains to be seen. These Florida high school students are articulate and compelling. They have created a national movement that may be exactly what is needed to see through the necessary legislative changes. We wish these Florida students all the best! Keep in mind that seniors will be able to vote while other high school students can lobby their parents, friends, relatives, to vote.
