Dear Friends & Neighbors,

If you are some one interested in history, documentary, or truth, be sure not to miss the movie “The Post“. It is a 2017 American political thriller film directed and produced by Steven Spielberg and written by Liz Hannah and Josh Singer, starring Meryl Streep as Katherine Graham and Tom Hanks as Ben Bradlee. The Post depicts the true story of The Washington Post journalists and their attempts in publishing the Pentagon Papers, classified documents regarding the 30-year involvement of the United States government in the Vietnam War.
The Post was chosen by the National Board of Review as the best film of 2017 and was named as one of the top 10 films of the year by Time and the American Film Institute. It received two nominations at the 90th Academy Awards, Best Picture and Best Actress for Streep, and six nominations at the 75th Golden Globe Awards: Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, Best Actress – Drama for Streep, Best Actor – Drama for Hanks, Best Screenplay and Best Original Score.
Finally, the Post and Times were together before the Supreme Court to plead their First Amendment argument for the freedom to publish the material. Meanwhile, newspapers across the country pick up the story in solidarity with the Post and Times. The court rules 6–3 in the newspapers’ favor, vindicating Graham’s decision in publishing the documents.
This movie reminds us of the importance of Freedom of Press and the necessary vigilance in order to insure its existence in a true democracy. So, parents and teachers, bring your family and students to see this movie of a historical time, to help them to understand what is required of true democracy, to help them to understand the motivation behind a government that calls its press the “fake news”, to help them to realize “Those Who Do Not Learn History Are Doomed To Repeat It.”
