Finally, the U.S.A. may have a chance to join the rest of the developed nations (and some developing nations) to establish Healthcare For All Americans. On Wednesday night, in one Senate office building, some of the leading proponents of the Democratic Party for this bill gathered to support a huge expansion of Medicare, with a government-run health program for all Americans. In another Senate office building, a group of Republican senators gathered to finalize the dismantling of the Affordable Care Act. These Republican senators proposed to send each state a lump sum of federal money, along with sweeping new discretion over how to use it.
Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, former candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, proposed what he called “a Medicare-for-all, single payer health care system,” with 16 Democratic senators co-sponsoring it. Among these Democratic supporting senators: Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kirsten E. Gillibrand of New York, and Kamala Harris of California, all names of potential candidates for presidency in 2020.
“Instead of wasting hundreds of billions of dollars trying to administer an enormously complicated system of hundreds of separate insurance plans, there would be one insurance plan for the American people with one single payer,” said Senator Sanders. Senator Bernie Sanders unveiled his “Medicare For All” bill on Wednesday to the cheering crowd. If passed, it would eventually cover every resident of the United States and be paid for by a series of changes to the tax code. Republicans quickly dismissed the plan, with the White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders calling it “horrible”.
