Hans Rosling, the Sword Swallower Who Enabled Numerical Data To Dance
Dear Friends & Neighbors,
(Please click on red links & note magenta)
I want to share the knowledge of his life with you all not just because he was a Swedish medical doctor, academic, statistician, public speaker, professor of International Heath at Karolinska Institutet, and co-founder and chairman of Wikipedia, but the wonderfully gentle and convincing way Hans Rosling was able to debunk myths about our changing world, from fears of massive overpopulation, education, poverty, income spread, to how to beat Ebola, using the inspirational method of statistical data in motion. In his effort to educate and encourage the public, he demonstrates his point of “what seems impossible may be possible” by swallowing the sword, towards the end (8:37–) of the video below:
Perhaps I am biased because I have been an educator (teaching mathematics in various colleges and universities) for over 20 years. I believe Hans Rosling’s life (July 27, 1948-Feb. 7, 2017) of 68 years had been extremely well lived. He had not only provided us with more clear views of our world, but also equipped us with the optimism and the fact-based world views (individual sense of responsibility for our fellow human beings) in our journey in becoming global citizens. Hans Rosling was also responsible for founding the Gapminder Foundation. The object of the Foundation shall be to promote sustainable global development and achievement of the United Nations Millennium Goals by increased use and understanding of statistics and other information about social, economic and environmental development at the local, national and global levels.
The object of the Foundation shall be achieved by:
- use and development of information technology for easily understandable visualization of statistics and other information;
- ownership, protection and free dissemination of development results;
- use, together with various cooperation partners, of the development results with a view to making statistics and other information about development available and understandable to broad user groups via the Internet and other media.

Let’s salute Hans Rosling, the sword swallower who enabled numerical data to dance!
